Happy Valley Races

Hong Kong is a diverse and vibrant place, shaped by its history and the mix of western and eastern influences. One of the world's most densely populated areas and a global business centre, recreational pursuits are at a premium and greatly enjoyed by residents and visitors. Above all, it is horseracing which most excites the passions and there are two outstanding courses to choose from, Sha Tin and Happy Valley.

Happy Valley Races, inside rail Situated right in the heart of Hong Kong Island, Happy Valley cuts an impressive and well loved green space amidst the urban high rises, and Happy Valley races are very much a cultural, sporting and social phenomenon in the city.

A large part of the success and appeal of Happy Valley races is the venue. Dating back to 1845, most of the city has grown up around it and with the tall buildings and high grandstands overlooking a tight track there is a real gladiatorial atmosphere which is extremely exciting. The racing season in Hong Kong is from September till June and whereas weekend racing is largely the province of Sha Tin, on week nights, Happy Valley comes alive to the sounds, sights and unforgettable experience of Happy Valley races. Wednesday night is typically race night in Happy Valley.

Tote betting on the horses is the only legal form of gambling permitted in Hong Kong and such is the extent of the money placed on races that in a single night, the value of the tote can exceed that raised in a year in many western racecourses.

This can mean huge money wins and great celebrations which help define the course as the number one evening leisure pursuit in the city. Even those not in the ground enjoy the experience from balconies in the surrounding buildings and race night parties are commonplace.

The shape of the course at Happy Valley races means great race views for all whether in the public grandstand or enjoying the races from the luxury and exclusivity of a private box. As such a popular attraction in the city there are many hospitality packages available and the Hong Kong Tourist Board offers special race night deals for visitors which can include some superb dining. The main dining facility is the Moon Koon, Restaurant which serves great Chinese cuisine a la carte or from a set menu.

Further race day dining suites which can be hired for private events and parties include the Wing, which can seat up to 60 for dinner and a selection of private boxes to accommodate anything between 10 and 200 guests.

Happy Valley Races, photo finish An excellent venue for enjoying some al fresco barbecue dining is Stable Bend Terrace, where all the atmosphere of the races is enhanced by the food, the evening air and the wide selection of soft and alcoholic drinks available. Further drinks opportunities are provided by Adrenaline, a stylish lounge and entertainment venue, and the Beer Garden which offers the best informal environment for race day, with beer, hot dogs and English race commentary.

In addition to the outstanding live race views, there is a huge screen at Happy Valley races on which all the action is relayed. Alternatives to balcony views are provided for those who prefer the social atmosphere of the Hall and Media Hall which have screens and betting facilities. There is also a more exclusive and private zone in which to enjoy the racing, called the Loge.

All of these course areas are found within a venue called the Leading Edge. The course has other facilities definitely worth a visit during race nights. These include the state of the art parade ring with retractable roof and the Racing Museum, detailing the history and culture of Hong Kong Racing.
